The week ended with celebrations in honour of the Royal Wedding. The Nursery, Nursery Class, Infants and Junior Girls all embraced the party atmosphere with picnic lunches and dressing up.


Two showstopper cakes in the Girls' Division Bake Off final were also inspired by the Royal Wedding. The six finalists pulled out all the stops to create delicious and creative bakes, and the judges' job of choosing Year 7 and Year 8-9 winners was harder than ever before.

The annual Football Festivals for Years 3-4 and Years 5-6 took place on the Bolton School pitches, with teams from more than 50 local schools taking part across two days. Both the Festivals enjoyed good sportsmanship from the players.


Girls' Division pupils studying history at GCSE and A Level had a special visit from an English Civil War musketeer. 'Obadiah Watt' came from the year 1649, the middle of the Civil War, and answered all of the girls' questions about the period - sometimes with surprising answers.


The Junior Boys took a trip to Liverpool to see the world-famous Terracotta Warriors at World Museum and learn more about China's first Emperor. The boys discovered more about burial rituals, found out about Chinese dynasties and saw several objects which have never visited the UK before.

The last week of term proved to be a busy one! On the very last day, despite the rain, Junior Boys attracted a large crowd of well-wishers, including the Bolton News, onto the Levels as they set off on their annual fun for charity.


Y8 and Y6 girls enjoyed a flying visit from the RAF Roadshow and visiting author Sufiya Ahmed, who wrote Secrets of the Henna Girl, told girls that if they have a passion, they should never give up.


Earlier in the week, future female entrepreneurs in Year 9 were encouraged to pitch their ideas in a Girls' Division Parents' Association event whilst boys and girls in Year 6 were also encouraged to consider their future in a Careers Carousel.


Both the Boys' Division and Girls' Division were commended for their GCSE results by the Incorporated Society of Musicians, whilst the review was in of Boys' Lower School interpretation of Alan Ayckbourn's Ernie's Incredible Illucinations.


Y8 girls, as part of their post-exam activities, also learnt about a range of career options as visiting professionals, including former pupils, talked about their working lives. And voting hotted up in the Bolton Children's Fiction Award as a little friendly competition between the Girls' Division and the Boys' Division took place. The write-up and video of the Audience with Ken Heathcote, a GD Parents' Association event, was also posted.


There was also sporting success to reflect on when current students and alumni helped the GB Water Polo team (U19s) qualify for the Euro Championships and there was individual success for Y5 girl Dinburgh who became the U11 N-W Gymnastics Champion and was called up to the national squad.


Finally, the Sixth Form boys performed one final good deed before leaving on study leave when a fancy dress fun run sought to raise funds for Wipe Your Tears.

Over the weekend of 7 and 8 July, the grounds of Bolton School will be transformed into a battlefield from the English Civil War for a spectacular free event, recreating "The Storming of Bolton". Cannons will fire, drums will sound, and swords will clash as costumed re-enactors from The Earl of Manchester's Regiment of Foote stage two exciting days of battles and fascinating 'living history'. This event is free and open to the public.

In September, the Girls' Division will host the prestigious Girls Go Gold Conference, an annual event organised in conjunction with the GSA, which is attended by sportswomen in Years 10 to 13. The day's keynote speakers are Sam Quek MBE, GB hockey Gold medallist at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and 3000m and 5000m Olympic athlete Eilish McColgan. Themed around "Where Sport Can Take You", the Girls Go Gold Conference promises to be an inspirational and motivational event.

A Creative Arts Day in the Boys' Division and at Manchester Art Gallery celebrated the recent submission of the School's Case Study for Platinum Artsmark status. In school, boys enjoyed interactive sessions with Old Boys Hadley Stewart and Alex Greenhalgh and a workshop with screenwriter Jon Brackley. In the evening, pupils gave the inaugural performance of 'My Room, My Bolton', a play inspired by the 1930s Mass Observation Project, as part of the School's 'gallery takeover'.


A team from the Girls' Division won first place in this year's Royal Society of Chemistry Manchester and District Chemquiz. The four pupils will now go on to represent the region at the national Top of the Bench competition next year.


Earlier this month, four Girls' Division pupils in Year 8 also achieved second place in the University Challenge at the recent Salters’ Festival at Manchester University, creating an almost perfect one minute stop-clock using the reaction between sodium thiosulfate and hydrochloric acid.

Girls in Year 6 and Year 8 discovered more about life in the RAF when an interactive roadshow visited the Girls' Division. The demonstrators used gaming, video clips, Virutal Reality and a fun flight simulator to help pupils to understand the training and career paths available.


Pupils read their work aloud at the Girls' Division Poetry Festival, which also featured readings from Simon Armitage. Enjoy pupils' readings again with this series of videos:
The Concert Band recently visited Brownlow Fold Primary School, where they put on a performance for the pupils. This was the first of several community music primary school visits taking place before the summer holidays.


In sport, Olivia Maguire has placed ninth nationally in the Junior Girls' Javelin Competition at the English Schools' Athletics Association Finals in Birmingham, where she represented Greater Manchester. Hollie Asquith has been named Espoir (Ages 12-13) British Solo Dance Champion 2018 after a tournament held in May. The Federation of Artistic Roller Skating (FARS) announced that she has also been selected to represent GB at the European Cup later this year. Anna Phillips has been selected to play in a tournament in San Sebastian in early July with the Manchester City Development Squad.

The final of the Parents' Association Future Entrepreneurs (PAFE) competition took place with four teams pitching their ideas to a panel of judges. Each team had created a product to help Year 6 pupils to transition to secondary school, with a focus on mental health and improving resilience. They impressed the judges with their flair, creativity and presentation skills.


Former Bolton School pupils were invited to come along to an Alumni Networking Event focused on The Future of the Creative Arts in a Digital Age. The 'takeover' of Manchester Art Gallery featured as its highlight Old Boys Mark Radcliffe (Class of 1976) and Tony Wadsworth (Class of 1974) "in conversation" with fellow Old Boy Adam Woolley (Class of 2013). There were also creative performances and exhibitions from current pupils.

The Friends of Bolton School Choir hosted an evening concert in the Arts Centre to raise funds for Speakeasy, a Bury-based charity specialising in helping people with aphasia. They performed hits from the musicals and shared the stage with current pupils and alumni. They raised £600 in total for the charity.


Finally, Bolton School Services Ltd turned 25 years old this month! BSSL currently employs 166 personnel and through an eclectic range of businesses using school buildings and facilities has put £5m into our bursary pot.

Bolton School hosted the second of two Civil War Education Days presented by costumed re-enactors from the Earl of Manchester's Regiment of Foote. These exciting workshops allowed pupils from local primary and secondary schools to learn more about how the Civil War affected Bolton, discover what people's lives were like, and take part in musket and pike drills for themselves.


This event comes ahead of The Storming of Bolton, a weekend of living history which will take place on Bolton School grounds over the weekend of 7-8 July 2018. Two members of the Ice Maiden expedition - the first all-female team to cross Antarctica coast-to-coast using only muscle power - joined Bolton School pupils to talk about their expedition. They gave an inspirational presentation, talking about how they overcame the difficulties faced in training and when they reached Antarctica, and encouraging pupils to find their 'Antarctica'.


The Lower School production of Ernie's Incredible Illucinations was a huge hit. Alan Ayckbourn's comic play about Ernie, a boy whose active imagination causes his "illucinations" to become real, was brought to life by a vibrant and lively cast.


On 30 June, Bolton School will help to mark the 50th anniversary of the last day of steam power in Bolton on 30 June. The school will be represented at this community gala by a stall and art exhibition. Pupils will also perform music and put on the second production of 'My Room, My Bolton', a play based on pupils' work around the Mass Observation project.

Old Boys, current pupils and staff celebrated 60 years since the opening of a purpose-build Chemistry block in the Boys' Division and to mark the passing of Old Boy Sir Harry Kroto, who the building was named after in 2013. Several generations of chemists swapped stories and memories in the labs, and there were also lectures from Old Boy Professor Malcolm Stevens FRS and Dr Jamie Gallagher, a special lunch, and even a 'Buckyball' cake in honour of Sir Harry's discovery, Buckminsterfullerene.


The Boys' Division PA has once more funded a variety of initiatives to improve boys' experiences in school. These include a brand new Bola cricket bowling machine, a replacement cricket-style Pavilion clock for the refurbished Tillotson Pavilion, music stands, and a learning support environment.

The Bolton School Ball was a huge success, raising a stellar £19,000! Over 360 guests enjoyed a spectacular evening with a 1920s Gatsby theme, featuring live music, aerobatics, a silver service dinner, a Heads and Tails game, and dancing. The money raised will go towards bursaries for girls and boys who begin their studies in Year 7 of the Girls’ or Boys’ Divisions at Bolton School and towards projects run by the two Parents’ Associations, who organised the event.

Bolton School hosted the Bolton Children's Fiction Award Ceremony 2018. All six of the shortlisted authors joined more than 700 pupils from local schools and Bolton School's Junior and Senior Schools for a morning of talks about their books, writing and the importance of reading. Old Boy Robert Parker then compered the Ceremony itself and announced the Younger Fiction and Overall winners to a very excited audience.


The guest speaker at the "hottest Prizegiving on record" was Old Boy Mr Stuart Brooks CMG. He drew on his thirty-two year career with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and current work at Chevron to fill his address with anecdotes and good advice. The evening was a celebration of all that Boys' Division pupils have achieved throughout the year.


Last weekend was busy for the Boys' Division. The school was involved in the Bolton Station Community Gala on Saturday 30 June. The school's young artists, musicians and actors provided entertainment and colour on the day, including a performance of 'My Room, My Bolton', a play specially commissioned from RoughHouse Theatre by the school and based on pupils' work around the Mass Observation Project.


On Sunday 1 July, the Boys' Division staged a museum takeover day at Port Sunlight. The event was titled The Leverhulme Festival, and involved a range of creative activities. These included arts and crafts workshops, musical performances, geocaching and a final outing for 'My Room, My Bolton'. The activities took place in several key locations across Port Sunlight.

Girls' Division pupils in Year 8 enjoyed watching 'Mes Chers Voisins' (My Lovely Neighbours), a play entirely in French from Onatti Productions. The girls had fun watching and taking part in the interactive play while also working on their understanding of the language.


Bolton School's A Level and GCSE pupils' work was included in the Best of Bolton Schools' Art and Design Exhibition. Antonia Jameson won an Achievement Award and the Overall Winner prize at the event.

The Year 7 and 8 Athletics Teams in the Girls' Division were successful at the Town Championships. The girls coped well with the extreme heat and the teams finished second and third overall, with several girls becoming Town Champion in their events.

Ollie Evans in Year 6 at the Junior Boys' School has earned himself the Primary Engineer's Leaders Award for his invention, the 'Ollie Cap', which facilitates easy hair-washing and head massages. He collected his award at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in Oldham.

The academic year ended with lots of activities throughout Bolton School.

The results of a competition to name the Girls' Division science laboratories after famous female scientists were announced on the last day of term. Pupils nominated women who have made a contribution to their scientific field. The scientists chosen range from fossil hunter and palaeontologist Mary Anning to astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell.


On the last weekend before the end of term, the School hosted a spectacular re-enactment of a Civil War battle, which recreated 'The Storming of Bolton' for eager audiences. In blazing sunshine, costumed re-enactors from the Earl of Manchester's Regiment of Foote donned many layers of 17th Century clothes to show how people in Bolton would have lived and brought to life the conflict.


Staff and students from both Divisions enjoyed the the glittering delights of the MEN School Awards ceremony at the Manchester Hilton on Deansgate in Manchester. The School was one of the three finalists in the Secondary School of the Year category.

Year 12 pupils reflected on their volunteering efforts throughout the year at the annual Community Action Celebration. They were joined on the evening by Mr Barry Dixon, Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, who congratulated students for all they have done for their local communities and presented their awards for 20, 50 and 100 hours of service.


The whole of the Boys' Division took part in a 10 mile sponsored walk to raise money for a range of worthwhile causes during the last week of term. The biennial walk, which normally sees pupils climb Rivington Pike, was diverted due to the moor fires on Winter Hill and took boys on a new route.


Beech House held a collection in support of the emergency services and armed forces who battled the recent moor fires on Winter Hill. The families of pupils and members of staff donated a variety of items, including water, energy drinks and snacks.


The Battle of the Bands was held earlier this term. The event raised over £1,200 which has now been presented to Ross Smith, a young medical student who was involved in a climbing accident. The money will help to provide a wet room at his home and fund other mobility and personal care aids.

Sports Day in the Girls' Division saw pupils compete in a variety of track and field events, cheered on by their peers. The girls also delighted in watching the Staff Relay, which was extremely close this year, and raised money for Oxfam with donations.


In the Boys' Division, Sports Day saw the return of Tug of War after more than a decade's absence. Boys and their parents cheered on competitors from each of the four Houses throughout the afternoon. The spectacle culminated in the Relays and Tug of War finals.


Pupils enjoyed traditional competitions at the Junior Girls' Sports Day, including including egg and spoon and sack races. Girls competed on behalf of their House in a wide range of events, enthusiastically supported by teachers, fellow pupils and parents.


Boys' Division pupils in Wigan House collectively completed a 200km charity walk this term. They were raising money for two worthy causes: the Dominica Disaster Relief Fund, which inspired the distance, and PAPYRUS.

There was fun in the sun for girls in Year 3 on their Outdoor Learning Day. Staff created a carousel of team building and problem-solving challenges to give pupils an introduction to outdoor pursuits prior to their residential trips to Patterdale Hall in Lake District.


Year 6 pupils at the Junior Girls' School recently completed their English Speaking Board (ESB) examinations. They recited poems, read from novels and created interesting presentations on topics ranging from unusual pets to personal collections to passions such as Indian Dancing or Liverpool Football Club! The first ever Lower School Prizegiving was held to acknowledge the achievements of Boys' Division pupils in Years 7 to 9. Mrs Waller gave a review of the year which recapped successes in many different fields, and prizes and certificates were awarded for participation, accomplishment and development.


The Year 8 girls' Rounders team ended the season in high spirits after becoming the Town Champions! They were a strong team throughout the competition, and worthy winners.

A team of four Year 12 students in the Girls' Division took part in the North West Regional Biology Quiz. They experienced a day of challenging but fun activities at UCLAN, and ultimately achieved third place in the competition.


Students in the Girls' Division also did well in the Cambridge Lower Sixth Challenge in Chemistry, which stretches Year 12 students beyond the A Level syllabus. Three girls received Copper awards and Millie Wood achieved Silver.

The Nursery's 20th Birthday was celebrated with traditional party games, a raffle and other al fresco activities to take advantage of the brilliant weather.


Hollie in Year 8 has earned medals in two British Championships this year. The most recent was a bronze medal in free skating to add to her gold.

The theme for this year's Junior Girls' Photography Competition was 'A Splash of Colour' and pupils provided a dazzling array of very different photos for the judges. The four year group winners and the overall winner received a canvas print of their entry.


The boys in Year 6 put on an excellent performance of Aladdin as their end of year show. This colourful production, which was Mrs Lockett's last after more than two decades of directing the annual Year 6 play, delighted audiences with the boys' version of this traditional tale.


The Junior Girls' School Charity Afternoon saw Year 6 pupils take over the playground with a colourful array of stalls selling sweets, hosting games and offering a variety of pampering to younger girls. They even arranged a flash mob dance! The afternoon was held to support 15 charities chosen by Year 6.


The annual Celebration Evening for girls in Year 7 and 8 was an evening filled with joy. Girls performed a range of uplifting songs, thoughtful readings and beautiful music on the themes of exploring difference and celebrating uniqueness. Boys in Year 12 took part in two Business Enterprise Skills Training (BEST) days to help them develop the skills and ways of thinking needed to succeed in the world of work. A carousel of activities, including an evening of interview practice, challenged students across the two days.

The Junior Girls put on their summer concert, which this year was Alice the Musical. This fast-paced retelling of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland bought the story to life with song, poetry and dance.


Children who will go on to school after the summer holidays celebrated their time at Bolton School Nursery with a lovely Leavers' Assembly. The children shared their memories, sang and danced for their audience of parents.


The Class of 2017 returned to Bolton School to impart the lessons learned to the current Year 12s. They shared their experiences of gap years and university and offered their 'top tips' for surviving and thriving after leaving School.

Old Girl Rt Rev Dr Jill Duff recently became the new Bishop of Lancaster. She was Consecrated at York Minster at the end of June, prior to her Installation Service which formally welcomed to her new Diocese at the beginning of July.

Last month, children at Bolton School Nursery celebrated Eid with delightful themed tea parties in each of the rooms.

Students receiving their A Level and GCSE results recently celebrated their successes at Bolton School.

The Boys' Division enjoyed the best set of A Level results in a decade, with 52.4% of papers marked at A*-A! The Girls' Division received similarly excellent results, with the percentage of passes at A* rising to 15.9%. Five boys and two girls go on to study at Oxford or Cambridge, and numerous students in both Divisions combined their A Level studies with extra-curricular interests and achievements.


There was success on GCSE results day too. Almost half of papers in the Girls' Division were graded at 8 or 9, the equivalent to A* or better. Boys' Division pupils also excelled with 17.5% of papers marked using the new number system achieving the very top grade of 9.


Some of those pupils celebrating on GCSE results day were actress Charleigh, who has appeared in Coronation Street and Car Share, who achieved eleven top grades; twins Joseph and Oliver; and indoor climbing champion Zoe.

Over the summer, two pieces of artwork by Bolton School pupils were placed in the final 10 of the national YPO Art Competition Secondary Category! A watercolour featuring birds by Zainab Emritte and a portrait by Antonia Jameson are both in the running to win and both await the judges' final decisions.


Looking ahead to the next academic year, the Girls' Division will host a free, public talk from Dr Jack Heal: Do Scientists Dream Of Synthetic Sheep? Taking place in the Girls' Division Great Hall at 7pm on Wednesday 19 September 2018, this event will introduce the fascinating world of synthetic biology, sometimes called “genetic engineering on acid”.

It's the start of a new school year at Bolton School, and we welcomed pupils and teachers back to the news that the 100 Campaign for Bursaries has reached its target of £5 million! The campaign was launched in 2015 as part of the School's 100th anniversary celebrations, and has been supported right across the School community. It has been a busy summer for Sixth Form student Sharon Daniel: not only did she complete her GCSEs and receive a stellar set of results, she also took part in the UK chess championships, winning at the Mega-Final and the Northern Giga-Final to win a place among the final 72 at the national Terra-Final!


At the end of last year, the Senior School Parents' Associations presented the School's Bursary Fund with a £10,000 donation. The money was raised at the hugely successful 1920s-themed Bolton School Ball 2018.


The Girls' Division will once again host the Historical Association: Bolton Branch lecture series. These talks take place on the first Monday of each month and feature a wide range of topics. Full details, including dates and information on each lecture, are available here on the School website.

With the start of a new school year, the Girls' Division once again celebrated pupils' achievements at Presentation Evening. The guest of honour was the Rt Rev Dr Jill Duff, an Old Girl who was recently appointed Bishop of Lancaster. She presented the prizes and gave a passionate address, telling girls to 'unfold your wings' and 'set the world on fire'. Watch her address in full here.


Girls Go Gold was hosted by Bolton School on Thursday. Olympic athletes Eilish McColgan and Beth Tweddle gave inspirational keynote speeches which provided the perfect frame for a day of discovering where sport can take you. The conference was arranged in conjunction with the GSA for pupils in Years 10-13 who are either elite sportswomen or studying PE.


The two keynote speakers at Girls Go Gold also found time to talk to younger girls in Years 6 and 7. Pupils were delighted to hear more about Eilish and Beth's experiences and the highs and lows of their careers, and even had the chance to hold their medals.

At the end of the first full week of term, staff at Beech House, Bolton School's infant school, were delighted to report that Reception children are settling in well.

Today we unveiled another short film designed to offer a glimpse into pupils' experiences. Click this link or press the play button below to find out how each child can reach their potential through our wide range of curricular and extra-curricular activities:


This year's series of Enrichment Evenings hosted by the Girls' Division began with a talk on synthetic biology from Dr Jack Heal. 'Do Scientists Dream of Synthetic Sheep?' asked and attempted to answer some of the issues and ideas surrounding this rapidly developing $10 billion industry and was sprinkled with humour.


The Junior Boys raised an amazing total of £8,000 from their charity Fun Run at the end of the last academic year. The money will be split equally between four charities chosen by the boys. Alzheimer's Society was nominated by Crompton House pupils and boys were very pleased to present a representative with a cheque for £2,000.


Headmaster Philip Britton gave an assembly commemorating the birthday of Lord Leverhulme, Bolton School's benefactor. He spoke of him as a public figure and the wider accomplishments of the philanthropist.

Artwork by Year 12 student Lauren has been chosen to adorn the cover of the 2019 Specialist Crafts catalogue. 'Camden' was chosen from a field of national entries and was part of her GCSE coursework.


Also in Art news, Year 12 student Antonia was announced as the runner-up in the YPO Art Competition Secondary Category with her colourful portrait. Her work will be featured in the YPO catalogue.

Millie in Year 12 travelled to Poland with the Wales team to take part in the U20s European Lacrosse Championships, where her team achieved bronze.

The Samba Band spurred runners on as they completed the 5K course at Bolton Hospice's Bubble Rush event. Their carnival-style music helped to keep everyone's spirits up.


Well done to Year 7 pupil Zara who has been selected to join the Hallé Children’s Choir! She is now enjoying rehearsals and looking forward to her first performance.

The annual Volunteering Fair took place this week, helping to introduce our Sixth Form students to some of the many different ways they can give back to the local community. Students in Year 12 are encouraged to volunteer for at minimum of 20 hours before the end of the academic year, with many achieving far in excess of the target.

On 4 October at 7pm, Bolton School will host a talk from Old Girl and Egyptologist Dr Joyce Tyldesley. This will be based on her latest book, Nefertiti's Face: The Creation of an Icon. This event is free and open to the public.

The school has released another short film, this one focusing on Bolton School's place in the wider community. Press the play button below or click this link to watch the film and see how pupils develop character, learning and empathy as they interact with the local community.


The Boys' Division has received a Platinum Artsmark. This standard mark acknowledges that arts and cultural provision in the school is of the highest standard. Two years of development across all areas of the arts led to this achievement, which recognises the work done not only in school but also in the wider community.


Local accountancy firm Cowgills launched their Future Stars Programme to an audience of Sixth Form students at Bolton School. This work experience opportunity gives two Year 12s the chance to experience the world of business and finance first-hand and gain valuable experience in all of Cowgills' departments.


Year 12 students in the Girls' Division worked on their business and enterprise skills on BEST Day. The girls took part in a series of four workshops designed to enhance attributes that are valued in the workplace, such as teamwork, creative problem-solving and presenting to an audience.

Year 10 pupil Lizzie Harkness has been named as a member of the England U15 football squad after attending Regional and National camps.

Over the summer holidays, Boys' Division pupil John Oxley-Harrison in Year 9 qualified individually for the Junior British Show Jumping Nationals. He placed 5th, making him one of the top showjumpers in the UK!


Many different areas of the School took part in the World's Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday, raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.


On Thursday 4 October at 7pm, Old Girl Dr Joyce Tyldesley will give a free, public talk  entitled Nefertiti's Face. The talk will be based on her latest book Nefertiti's Face: The Creation of an Icon and should be relevant to anyone with an interest in Egyptology, archaeology, geography or visiting ancient sites. This is part of an ongoing series of Arts and Sciences Enrichment Evenings hosted by the Girls' Division.

There was excitement at Bolton School as the shortlist for the 2019 Bolton Children's Fiction Award was announced at a lunchtime ceremony. Pupils from primary and secondary schools across Bolton will enjoy reading the six shortlisted book in the coming months and will vote for their favourites in May.


At the Junior Boys' Harvest Assembly, pupils and their families were encouraged to think about others and give thanks for all that they have. Dave Baggley of Urban Outreach was the guest of honour for the occasion. He thanked everyone for their generous donations, which will help Urban Outreach to feed those who are less fortunate during the winter months.


The A Level PE cohort at Bolton School continues to go from strength to strength.


A delegation of 55 Chinese pupils in Years 8-11 from Huang Gang High School, Beijing, visited Bolton School on Tuesday as part of their trip to the North West. They joined boys in lessons during the afternoon.

Harvest was celebrated in the Junior Girls' School with reflections on the origins of the festival and the importance of sharing what we have. Meanwhile the Junior Boys' Harvest assembly asked pupils to think about others. The Senior Girls' Harvest celebration also focused pupils' minds on what is really important: Year 7 pupils asked what being 'rich' really means. Year 2 pupils led the Harvest Assembly at Beech House with the story of a village where no one was willing to share.


The donations of food and other essential items from all three schools were given to local charity Urban Outreach.

The Boys' Division sponsored walk at the end of last year has raised £10,000 for charity. The money has been split between 10 local and national charities, with each receiving £1,000, and representatives recently visited the school to collect the funds.


Old Girl Joyce Tyldesley returned to give a concise and interesting lecture on our obsession with the Ancient Egyptian Queen Nefertiti and the iconic bust that has made her so famous. Delving into the history of the bust and the facts we know about Nefertiti herself, Dr Tyldesley discussed why so many people are drawn to the queen and the issues that arise from this.


Bolton School hosted a fantastic presentation about the growth mindset, based on the message of Matthew Syed's book 'You Are Awesome'. The Boys' Division Great Hall was filled with local primary school children, including some Junior Boys, who listened to inspiring accredited speaker Rob Carpenter.


Children in Year 1 were delighted to have the opportunity to meet and learn about owls, all of which were rescued by Lancashire Hawks and Owls. Margaret and Michael gave pupils a few facts about the different types of owl they had brought with them, and everyone had the opportunity to stroke each of the magnificent birds.


'It's a Numbers Game' enthralled Girls' Division pupils in Year 8 as they discovered from representatives of BAE Systems, the RAF and the Royal Navy how maths is used every day, often without anyone realising it. The presentation also introduced them to a robot and showcased many different types of engineering.


Infant pupils in Year 2 had an interactive presentation through which they learned all about what it was like to go to school in the Victorian period.


Boys' Division pupils in Year 8 have the exciting opportunity this term to take part in a radio production project with Bolton FM. The boys began with a presentation on what local radio is all about and progressed to planning their own show and even visited the studio to find out more.


The inaugural round of the Historical MasterChef competition was held in the Girls' Division. Pupils had spent previous weeks researching the chosen time period to create a feast of Roman-inspired treats for the judges.


Pupils from both Divisions in Years 10 to 13 got to grips with the wide range of careers relating to the environment that are available to them. Several alumni returned to share their workplace experiences and explain how different jobs relate to helping the environment.

There has been a glut of sporting success in the Girls' Division. A number of Girls' Division pupils have been selected to join the U19 Lancashire Lacrosse A and B teams. In netball, both the U15 and U16 teams have won the Bolton Schools' Tournament, and a Year 8 pupils has been invited to join the U13 Lancashire Academy Centre of Excellence for Netball. A year 7 pupils has been named North West Champion for her age group after winning a gymnastics competition, and ten pupils in Years 7 to 10 have been asked to represent Bolton town at the Greater Manchester Schools' Cross Country Championships.

Twenty-two musicians from all year groups in the Boys' Division entertained with a Musical Evening held in the Arts Centre. A huge range of musical styles and instruments made this an enjoyable evening for everyone. The next will take place on Thursday 16 May 2019 and a warm invitation is extended to all.


Ahead of Bonfire Night and Halloween, the Junior Boys were given a presentation about staying safe at this time of year from the local fire service.

Old Boy Chris Harbour, who reached the quarter-finals of MasterChef, returned to School to talk to Girls' Division GCSE Food Technology students, exactly one year after filming his last episode. He spoke about his passion for food and inspired them with some of his favourite dishes, both from the show and from cooking at home.


Recent leaver Stewart Knights gave a presentation about the architecture of the Eden Project at the national Art Out Loud Festival held at Chatsworth House. His talk was part of the ‘ARTiculation: Inspired by Buildings’ category.

Coming up after half term, Jo Fairley, an award-winning journalist and co-founder of the global ethical chocolate company Green & Black's, will give a free talk in the Girls' Division on Monday 12 November at 7pm. Everyone is welcome to come along to what promises to be a fascinating evening. Full details are here and the talk is part of the Girls' Division's ongoing series of Enrichment Lectures.

Bolton School Services Limited (BSSL), which this year celebrates its 25th birthday, is the business that keeps on giving. All of the profits generated are used to finance bursaries, which support pupils aged 11 years and over at Bolton School.

Bolton School was seeing spots on Friday to help to raise money for Children in Need! Children at the Junior Boys' and Girls' Schools, Infant School and Nursery were involved and brightened up the School with spotty accessories while also raising money for a great cause.


Bolton School has been shortlisted for the Senior School of the Year category in the 2019 TES Independent School Awards. These prestigious awards recognise and celebrate the most outstanding individuals and institutions in the independent sector. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in February.


The School was proud to be a category sponsor at the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Business of the Year Awards. Bolton School sponsored the Young Business of the Year Award, which was won by Noir Agency, an Ancoats-based branding company.


This week, Bolton School held an Open Art Exhibition to showcase work created by current and former pupils, members of staff, parents and friends of the School. The Exhibition was curated by the Boys' Division Art Department and PA on behalf of the whole Foundation, and featured 2D and 3D artwork across a huge variety of media, from paintings and sculptures to films and installations.


Remembrance Assemblies took place across the Bolton School Foundation on the Friday before 11 November. Each part of the School commemorated 100 years since the signing of the Armistice in 1918, reflected on the reality that soldiers faced in the trenches, and remembered all those who were killed or affected by conflict in the past century. The Junior Boys and Senior Boys alike paid tribute to the Old Boys who were killed in the First World War. The Junior Girls' assembly was led by Year 6 pupils, who also reflected on the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance. The Senior Girls were joined by Old Girls for this poignant occasion.

The School also stepped in to help Old Boy James Butchart on Remembrance Sunday. Thanks to transport provided by Bolton School Services, he and the rest of the University of York Brass Band were able to take pride of place at the head of the Remembrance Day Parade at Easingwold near York.

The Girls' Division Parents Association organised an evening of 'Fantastic Feasts and Fireworks' in honour of Bonfire Night. The occasion was themed around magic and Harry Potter, and this year included the addition of a Food Court as well as traditional fare in the Dining Hall and a host of fun stalls. The display from Titanium Fireworks was once again spectacular.


The Nursery Class recently learned all about hedgehogs with help from a volunteer at Chorley Hedgehog Rescue Centre. Their interest was sparked when they discovered hedgehogs in the Nursery Class garden.

The Nursery Class and children from the Butterfly Room at Bolton School Nursery also visited a local Temple to learn more about Diwali and how it is celebrated.

Girls in Year 10 enjoyed making their own short silent movies during a day spent with the Young Film Academy. They learned some of the filmmaking techniques used in the industry and then used them to create a dramatic story. All of the films were screened at the end of the day, and an Oscar was awarded to the best effort.


Junior Boys' School pupil Cormac has only been a member of the Halle Children's Choir since the summer, but nonetheless he has been chosen to sing 'Walking in the Air' at the Halle's Christmas screening of 'The Snowman'! Over the holidays, Year 6 pupil Nathan also re-auditioned to stay with the Choir for a third year.

In sporting news, Year 9 pupil Teja helped Greater Manchester County Football Club to win a match against Shropshire after she was selected to play as their goalkeeper for the first half of the game. Junior Girls' School pupil Dinburgh has collected an impressive haul of medals for Rhythmic Gymnastics after competing at the English Championships and Scottish Championships.

Before the summer holidays, two Senior Girls entered the UK Schools Computer Animation Competition with an animation they had made highlighting the issues around constant mobile phone use. Their piece was announced as the Key Stage 4 Group Award winner!

Jo Fairley gave an inspirational talk about her "rollercoaster" journey as the co-founder of chocolate company Green & Black's. She talked about the life lessons she has learned along the way and gave her business tips to aspiring entrepreneurs in the audience.


This event was the latest in a series of Enrichment Lectures organised by the Girls' Division.

Sixth Form students from both Divisions have signed up to the Anthony Nolan stem cell donor register as potential donors. If they are found to be a match, they could go on to save a life. The school holds annual educational sessions with the Sixth Form to make students aware of the importance of blood, organ and stem cell donation.


The School's ensembles put on a varied show filled with familiar tunes at the Boys' Division Autumn Concert. Pupils in Year 8 provided a wonderful finale with three songs: 'Paradise', 'It Must Be Love' and 'Pompeii'.

Pupils in Year 1 at Beech House, Bolton School's Infant School, had fun learning about history through drama. The session with Freshwater Theatre Company helped pupils to discover the important historical events of 1666: the Plague and the Great Fire of London.


Ten pupils in the Girls' Division have been selected for the Lancashire Lacrosse Under 15s squads.

In the days before 11 November, the Junior Boys' School was visited by First World War soldier'Tommy Atkins'. All of the pupils in Years 3 to 6 enjoyed an informative session with him in which he helped them to understand the realities of what soldiers faced from 1914 to 1918, and the importance of Remembrance.


Children in Bolton School's Nursery Class dressed up as superheroes to raise money for Children in Need last week.

Congratulations to Old Boy Jonny Ashton who was part of the victorious production team whose programme Celebrity Hunted was named 'Best Entertaining Documentary' at this year’s Grierson Awards.

Staff at Bolton School were delighted to receive two prizes at the Bolton News School Awards 2018. Girls' Division Mathematics teachers Mr Heppleston and Mr Hitchin won the Hayley Mathieson Fundraiser of the Year Award for their Well Good charity, while Mrs Gore, the Head's PA at Beech House, the Infant Department, was named the Unsung Hero of the Year.


A Uniformed Services Dinner was held last weekend to honour the 81 Old Boys who lost their lives in the First World War. The evening, which was attended by alumni, staff and pupils in cubs, scouts, cadets and other uniformed organisations, featured several poignant tributes to the School's fallen.

Old Boy Rik Thwaites returned to school to give a talk about Artificial Intelligence (AI). Pupils in the Boys' and Girls' Divisions were excited to hear about the history of AI over the last 60 years and were keen to discover how it is used today. Rik's fascinating talk also touched on some of his fond memories of the School.


Year 5 pupil Anushka Kishore donated all of her birthday money to When You Wish Upon a Star, the charity that aims to grant wishes to seriously ill children. Her generosity impressed family, friends and teachers and earned her a thank you letter and certificate from the charity.


Miss Bramhall, a chemistry teacher in the Boys' Division, was recently given one of five small grants from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Education Techniques Group. She used the grant to share her innovative method for teaching balancing equations, a key concept in chemistry which can be challenging for pupils. Two Year 10 boys helped to create a video to explain the teaching method, which can be viewed here on the RSC Education Techniques Group website.

A pair of Girls' Division Sixth Form students have progressed to the next round of the English Speaking Union’s Schools' Mace Competition. Issy Plant and Rebecca McGinty debated in favour of the topic 'This house would weight votes such that the younger the voter, the more powerful their vote'.


Old Boy Rob Dobson has donated educational robot products, retro computers and technical expertise to Boys' Division pupils in the Electronics Club. The items will allow pupils in all year groups to explore interesting projects and will no doubt help to inspire future generations of entrepreneurial engineers.

Year 9 pupil Hannah has been named one of twelve English Speaking Board (ESB) Young Speakers of the Year for 2018! She collected her award and performed a presentation at the Young Speaker of the Year Showcase in Liverpool.


Children in Science Club at Beech House, Bolton School's Infant department, were excited to visit a laboratory in the Senior Girls' School. With a little help from Sixth Form girls, they completed a series of experiments before enjoying a fun demonstration from Ms Teichman.


Parents and guardians of pupils at Beech House also helped to spread a little Christmas cheer to less fortunate children in the local area. They donated a large supply of toys and gifts to the Bolton Lions' Christmas appeal, which will be given to children aged 0-18 across the town.


In the Boys' Division, pupils enjoyed musical performances from young talented musicians during assembly. Brother and sister duo No Wahala performed 'Earned It' by The Weekend and 'Trip' by Ella Mai, while Youth Concept played two original songs, Crazy and Bianca. Girls' Division pupils in Year 7 earlier this year completed a sponsored silence in order to help Hits Radio's Mission Christmas Appeal. They have already raised £3,700, with more still to come in! The money collected so far was spent during an exciting 'trolley dash' at Smyths toy store at Middlebrook, and the toys and gifts the girls chose will be donated to the appeal.


Christmas festivities officially began with the first Bolton School nativity of the year, which was performed by the Nursery Class and Nursery children in the Butterfly room. 'Whoops-A-Daisy Angel' told the story from the point of view of an angel who is a little different from all the others, but still manages to be the heroine of Christmas.


Year 7 pupil Mabelle has been selected for the GB Home Nations squad for 2019 following her recent 6th place finish in Great Britain in a National Gymnastics competition! She is also the North West champion for her age group.

Four Girls' Division pupils helped the Lancashire U15s to win a tournament in York.

Parents in the Boys' Division received valuable advice about the university application process from guest speaker Bernard Strutt, Head of UK/EU student recruitment at the University of Manchester. This evening event was organised by the Boys' Division Parents' Association as part of their Teenage Journey series of talks.

Bolton School was delighted to receive the inaugural Independent School of the Year Award from Independent School Parent magazine. The Award was given to both the Boys' and Girls' Divisions. The Boys' Division also received the Independent Boys' School of the Year. The Girls' Division was highly commended in the Independent Girls’ School of the Year category, and the School as a whole was highly commended in the Independent School of the Year for Community Outreach category.


The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Christmas Lecture took place at Bolton School, wowing audiences with exciting scientific experiments and explanations. Dr Frank Mair of the University of Manchester gave two presentations in the Boys' Division Great Hall for almost 1,000 pupils from 20 schools across the North West.


The annual Tillotson Lecture was this year given by Old Boy John Derbyshire OBE. He gave a fascinating talk about his long career with the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and his involvement with the British Sailing Team, and provided insider insight into the world of Olympic sailing.


The Junior Girls told 'The Shepherd's Story' as their Christmas performance, combining narration and acting with beautiful music and song. This version of the Nativity was based on Michael Morpugo's book 'On Angel Wings' and featured a number of compelling solo performances and lovely dances from Year 3 pupils.

The Junior Boys also put on their annual Carol Service in the Boys' Division Great Hall this week. The evening began with the traditional performance of 'Once in Royal David's City' and continued with more rousing carols, including performances from the school choirs.


Old Boy Ashish Choudry returned to Bolton School to speak to members of MedSoc about life as a GP. He was able to give an overview of the job and talked about the attributes and skills that are particularly useful in this career.

Dr Nick Gent, another Old Boy, also came back to give an enthralling talk about his work at Public Health England and his involvement with the nerve agent incidents in Salisbury and Amesbury earlier this year. The talk was followed by several pertinent questions. He also spoke to Sixth Form physicists about Polonium-210 in the afternoon.

Four teams of Year 12 students went head to head in the final of the Business Challenge competition. They once again pitched their polished creative business ideas, which had already been chosen as the best in the year group following the Business Challenge Day earlier this term. The judges decided this year to give the trophy and prizes to Napee, an innovative idea to create a biodegradable nappy.


Two Girls' Division pupils have been invited to join the 'Dragon Academy' - the Junior Wales Lacrosse programme. This development pathway is designed to identify and support players who have the potential to play at elite level.

Year 9 pupil Jamie has won a bronze medal at the British Judo Championships in Sheffield. This follows a silver medal at the Welsh Open earlier this year, and he has also won a gold medal at the North West Championships.

Year 11 pupil Anna has been called up to the England Women's U16 football squad, and this month will travel with the national team to the Netherlands for two competitive matches.

Bolton School was delighted to welcome Australian and Romanian water polo players ahead of an English Schools' Swimming Association (ESSA) international triangular tournament featuring these players and their English U17 counterparts. The matches took place in Manchester and Bolton, and pupils from the Junior Girls' and Junior Boys' Schools were excited to watch the action.

During the last week of term, Bolton School's Infant pupils raised money for Save the Children with a Christmas Jumper Day! They brightened up the halls and classrooms of Beech House with their colourful jumpers and each donated £1 to this worthy cause.


The target for this year's Christmas Hamper Challenge has been met once again with pupils from across Bolton School gathering 2,782 selection boxes for Urban Outreach's Christmas Hampers! Teams of Sixth Form students led the donation drive, coming up with creative fundraising ideas and encouraging the rest of the School to support their cause.


Girls' Division pupils have also been raising funds through their Christmas traditions. The Year 10 Christmas Post and Prefects' Panto were both as popular and fun-filled as ever, and alongside other festive fundraisers have helped the girls' chosen charities this Christmas.


The Girls' Division Ceremony of Carols was the perfect way to usher in the festive season. Current pupils, parents and members of staff were joined by Old Girls for this special occasion, which featured traditions such as the 'The Holly and the Ivy' sung as a round and 'Jesus Christ the Apple Tree' performed by the Accidentals.

The Boys' Division Christmas Festival was a feast of joyful carols, powerful readings and reflections, and a thoughtful meditation from Rev. Meanwhile, children in the Nursery Class for Three and Four Year Olds were excited to discover a special visitor waiting for them beside the Christmas Tree on their Christmas Jumper Day: none other than Father Christmas himself!

Members of the Girls' Division Christmas Cake Club created real showstoppers this year, which were on display on the evening of the Ceremony of Carols. This year, the girls' cakes were so impressive that the judges decided to award joint first place to Annabelle Gibbs and Kiersten Keogh.


Also in the final week of term, Girls' Division Headmistress Sue Hincks was announced as the new President of the Girls' Schools Association (GSA). Her opening remarks focused on the importance of helping young people to have confidence, critical judgement and a love of learning in order to succeed the rapidly changing environment of the 21st century.

In the New Year, Boys' Division teacher Dr Turner will appear in the BBC's eight-part series Back In Time For School. In this series, she time-travelled to different points in history between 1895 to 1999 to experience what school was like for both teachers and pupils. The series begins on Thursday 3 January and will run for 8 weeks on BBC 2 at 8pm.


Pupils from both Divisions impressed audiences with their performance of 'Great Expectations', which was produced in collaboration with the Octagon Theatre. Pupils in years 8 and 9 worked with BAFTA-nominated writer and director Janys Chambers to bring Charles Dickens' story to life with a new adaptation.


Senior Boys in Blackburn House helped to support the Blackburn Food Bank with an enormous donation of food towards the end of term. Pupils' generous donations will help to provide more than 470 meals for those in crises in the Blackburn and Darwen area.


Year 13 student Abigail is studying Art for A Level with plans to continue her passion at university, and was recently delighted to sell one of her pieces to an Old Boy following the Bolton School Open Art Exhibition!


Junior Girls in Year 6 had fun towards the end of term in a drama workshop led by Coronation Street's Melissa Johns. They thoroughly enjoyed trying out different acting techniques and drama games and threw themselves into every activity with lots of enthusiasm.


Year 7 boys took part in the annual Gymnastics Final, which is one of the oldest competitions in the School. Following competitions within each form, the finalists performed their near-flawless gymnastics routines in front of a supportive audience of their peers.

Two Old Girls from the same year group recently returned to Bolton School to give talks. Hanna Miraftab, who now owns her own dental practice and recently found 'stardom' on The Real Housewives of Cheshire, spoke to pupils in Year 11 about who they want to be and how to make that a reality. Her old friend Hannah Bradley, who is now a Dispute Resolution Solicitor, led a workshop on how to resolve conflict for girls in the Sixth Form.


Old Boy Ashish Choudry also recently returned to the School to address students from both Divisions who are members of MedSoc. He gave an insightful lunchtime presentation about his work as a GP, advising the Sixth Form about the qualities and skills they will need to one day become good doctors.

Earlier in December, Old Boy John Kohorn returned to School to talk to pupils in Year 6 at the Junior Girls' School. He helped to bring their history lessons to life through the story of his family's escape from Nazi persecution in Europe in 1939.


Junior Girls in Year 5 also enjoyed a special presentation on the Rainforest from Bolton School librarian Mrs Caller, who travelled to Brazil with the venture scouts when she was 18 and was able to share her adventures through photos and memories.

Boys' Division students in Years 8 to 13 created powerful pieces of artwork to commemorate the lives of victims and survivors of the Holocaust, which will be displayed at the Bolton Holocaust Memorial Day service. They worked on the project with Holocaust art educator Caroline Slifkin to explore this year's theme: torn from home.


BSS Leisure has gained accreditation from Swim England to independently deliver  Swim England Level 1 and Level 2 Swim Teacher courses! There are six courses currently planned between April and October, which will be held in the Arts Centre swimming pool. Junior Boys went on an exciting musical journey with Travelling by Tuba. The interactive presentation went on a historical and geographical trip through the development of wind instruments. Boys enjoyed music played on a wide range of instruments and some volunteers even joined in with the performance.


Old Boy Terrence Li returned to the School to talk to current Boys' Division Sixth Form students about his career in Finance. He spoke candidly about the rewards and the challenges alike, giving students a fair picture of what it is like to work in this sector. He also encouraged students to undertake work experience and gave other helpful tips for the application process.


Looking back at last term, Boys' Division musicians helped to raise money for the charity Muscular Dystrophy UK by performing at a fundraising concert.
